Thanks - this is a great reference site, always like to hear from someone who has tested the product personally. You give clear pros and cons and I'm able to make a decision based on my personal taste. Thanks and keep testing 'stuff'.

I second the above - DO NOT BUY -

Have tried recovering 2 separate macintosh computers, on 10.4 and 10.5 using version 3.5.
On both efforts, the directory trees were viewable on the drive, but not mountable.
Stellar Phoenix quick recovery ran for many hours, recovering all of the files, only to have every file corrupt.
What good is it to have 55Gb of corrupt files?

I am working with Tech Support now, They had NO advice, just we'll email you a form to fill out.

Frustrated - will try Data Rescue Next

The Pogo seems to be the best of a less than complete selection of Stylus's that work without issues.

Why doesn't someone make a prduct that is conductive without interuption --- it is obvious that the IPhone needs it ( ie. with all the games that could be used )

Any thoughts?

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! Terrible. It either completely shuts itself down after 20 seconds, or freezes your entire computer 20 minutes into a recovery. The customer service is TERRIBLE---all they do is give you the runaround, and ask you to provide impossible details to help them. They asked me for a screenshot of when the search was going on----knowing full well that it was freezing my computer and making it impossible to do so.

THEY DO NOT HONOR THE 30 DAY MONEY BACK GUARANTEE!!!! AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!

I had a very similar problem as Beth's with the Brodit unit I bought at Proclip.com. I used their Angled Mount in my Honda Odyssey with a Garmin Nuvi 360 GPS for about two years with no problems. Then the bottom "hook" that holds it into the dashboard broke and my $70 mount is suddenly useless. While the mount as a whole seems very sturdy, the plastic is actually very thin where it's creased to form the hook, and that's where it broke off. Seems like a real design flaw to me.

I also called ProClip to complain and they gave me the same story as Beth: only a one year warranty, nobody else has had problems (guess THAT'S not true) nothing they can do, etc.

From the great reviews and the sturdy appearance I expected the mount to last much longer. But wasn't the case and I would caution others from making that assumption. Especially if you remove your GPS from the mount frequently (as you should to prevent theft) your ProClip mount may have to be replaced well before your car does.

I bought a Proclip for my car and had it for about a two years and loved it because it fit perfectly into a little spot in my car and wasnt in the way of anything else really and it did its job. However, both of the specific (and expensive) parts have broken since then. When I contacted them at Proclip, they told me they only have a one year warranty, so all they could offer me was free shipping on a new order. I told them I didnt have much confidence that if I ordered (and paid full price again) for the same thing that I wouldnt feel confident that it wouldnt just break again. They wanted to stick with their warranty and didn't offer any other type of reimbursement or offer on a new one. I was disappointed because I do like the product, but dont think it should just break (a chip broke off of it so it basically just doesnt hold it up anymore and isn't functional) and then they dont stand behind it at all....

Dave,

Excellent review and I will look for these. The only reason is that I wouldn’t get this product is if I’m unable to get a real custom fit for the ear buds. You wrote, “The Radius Atomic Bass fits well into my ear and doesnt slip out like the standard earbuds. The plastic covers come in three different sizes to help insure a custom fit and the earbuds are angled to fit deeper in the ear canal.” I had impressions of my ears taken for my iPod ear buds and they of course fit perfectly since it’s MY ear. I will contact the company that I used (Earsound Customs) for my iPod ear bud attachments to see if they can help me with this product. I would recommend anyone putting something in their ear to seek out a true custom fit. Once you experience it you will never go back to “three different sizes.” Hope this helps.

Joe

Hi! Since I upgraded Safari (to 3.2.1) I've gotten a message on startup saying that it did not load the FLVR 1.0 plugin, because it had not been tested with this version of Safari. Is there a new version of the plugin, or is this a relic that I should uninstall, or ??? Thanks for your support!

This is a nice case I like your review too. I purchased one of those cheap cases for under $5 recently and it literally fell apart witin a month. I am in the market for something durable and high quality. I like how it has a holder for the earphones too. This is very practical.

For the screen cleaning I like to use the suede cloth given out by your eye glass store.
These clean well and are antistatic as well just make sure the cloth is very clean to start with. Thanks for your article!

That's a great idea, as I do alot of traveling and conduct much of my business from my laptop. My hands are definitely feeling the abuse of the traditional position they are forced to be in. Can't believe how cost-effective it is as well. Good post :)

Hey, thanks for the review! Someone pointed me to this and I found it pretty on the spot.

On the Apple TV browser hack: The good news is that something easier is coming, the bad news is that your experience was just about the same as mine. When I wrote that hack it worked exactly as written. When I tried to follow the instructions from the book after updating my Apple TV to the latest version (after the book came out) the instructions no longer worked.

The problem seems to be that the patchstick program had changed. When i used the old patchstick program it worked but not with the new one. It is hard to write this kind of stuff when everything is in flux. On of the mistakes I made in the book was not stressing that enough. A "if this doesn't work try the latest instructions at blah blah" or perhaps explaining what is going on in greater depth.

Thanks for taking the time to read the book!

Beware of this product and the company. There is NO phone support at all - tech support takes about 3 days to email back. There is a 15% return charge (open box fee - about 30$, and you have to pay shipping both ways- So, it cost me about $50 to NOT be able to watch tv on my computer).

There is a lag between the video and audio on all channels (with a top of the line smoking fast mac book pro), the reception via antenna (the best ones recommended by Elgato themselves) is terrible and even the cable channels have terrible pictures. It is not really possible to trouble shoot such issues via email. Either stick to your TV or buy something else

DoctorDave,

Thanks for the review of BusySync.

We added the ability to limit the amount of data you sync with Google in a recent update of BusySync. You'll find it in BusySync > Google > Settings > Don't publish events older than [x months]. This was added to solve the problem you and some others experienced when trying to sync very large calendars to Google. I hope you like it. :)

@Jeff, no they do not make a firewire version...unfortunately :)

@Jessika, Firewire is an alternative to USB that Apple pioneered. It is used mainly in video and high data production environments. It tends to be a bit faster and more robust than even USB 2.0

Hope that helps! :)

I've been using Pzizz for over a year now and love it. I use it almost every night. I don't use the Energizer mode as often as I'd like, because there's never an opportunity at school.

You also have the option of turning off the "voice narration" and that's typically how I have mine set.

I would also highly recommend it.

Steven,

You might want to check with Comcast, because they may be taking you for a ride. The only type of cable you need a box to receive is digital cable. If you just want to watch regular analog standard definition cable, you do not need a cable box. Eventually all cable will go digital, but that won't happen for a few years. In the meantime, the EyeTV works just like the "cable ready" TVs that have been sold for the past 25 years -- in other words, no box needed (unless you want high definition of HBO, Showtime, etc).

Hope this helps. Good luck.

I recently returned this device to amazon. Fortunately I bought it at amazon, as I am still waiting for a reply from the email I received three weeks ago from Elgato. The technical support, while polite, either doesn't really read your email or doesn't respond for weeks, as noted above.

I am quite familiar with computers, but not with TV interfaces. I was under the impression that I could plug my cable (from the wall) into this device, which did not work. For it to work via cable (instead of catching OTA signals via a antenna and booster) one must use a cable box. Apparently Comcast doesn't allow boxes they don't charge you for, so I can't use a box without giving Comcast more of my money. The antenna and the booster add a hundred bucks (to do it right) to the cost of setting this up. I know I lack the technical knowledge to fully understand how to get the most out of this product, but Elgato needs to explain more fully just how to use it. However, they don't even respond to emails . . .

Thanks for listening.

The EyeTV 250 does support using the IRTrans with iRed software to control a cable box the same way the TiVo Series 2 does. Not as convenient as using a CableCard - CableLabs is being obstructionist about whose hardware gets the OK for that; so far only TiVo and ATI have consumer cableCard products on the market. But the iRed software's integration with EyeTV is basically seamless, it really works great with my encrypted digital cable account.

[...] Though their Targus bag had nice storage room and met the protection criteria, it wasn’t stylish. Even without my nerd day hangups, the backpack wasn’t very good looking. It reminded me of one of those square Pan-Am travel bags grandma used to have. I had this sudden urge to offer people breath mints while using it…or at least save teabags for future dunks (Grandma: “You can reuse a teabag at least 3 times, stop wasting money young man”). However, I’ve seen those type of bags at Urban Outfitters, so maybe it actually attempted to be retro. Nonetheless, the shoulder strap didn’t adequately distribute the weight and I felt very uncomfortable walking with it. It was great on the bike though. After forcing myself to use it for the review, I quickly put it on the shelf and abandoned it. It’s a backpack with a messenger bag strap, nothing more. Sorry Targus, no offense, but I don’t think you’ll be seeing too many marketing or fashion majors using your bag. Maybe you can do some cross-promotion on Warcraft, or hit the other end with http://www.aarp.org/. It was an upgrade, but not by much. The only reason I’d upgrade from my black bag to this is because my Macbook fits perfect. However, I had to remove my Neocase sleeve to use it. [...]

Hello, iMac 24 inch friend,

thank you for your excellant review for the iMac 24-inch model. I am in the market for this one and have been to the Apple Store several times. I am presently a Windows 98 user.
Concerning playing the DVD , they gave me an earful , which I really dont understand. It goes like this.
I have a couple of European DVDs and I am being told I can only play them 5 x on this system and than the system will set the final setting and I will be unable to play American DVDs. I just dont get it. When I paid for DVDs either in Europe or the USA , I should be able to play them at all times.

Since I am a layman here, can you please put some light on this in plain English. I would very much appreciate hearing from you, thank you for your time. with kind regards, Manfred H. Braig

[...] With all that extra space on your full iPod what can you put on it? Want to watch YouTube videos on your iPod? No problem, Jax by Joesoft (a division of Prosoft Engineering) does that! It installs into iTunes and allows you to easily transfer videos to your iPod. Not only will it do that, but it will synchronize your Apple Mail, Word Documents, and PDFs. Heck, it will even download weather forecasts, driving directions, gas prices, movie showtimes, and stock quotes. Apparently the 3.0 version will tell you the next president, but Joesoft is working out the bugs on that (just kidding … maybe). Oh, and Jax works with an iPhone too, but that’s kind of redundant. While Jax’s content can’t be updated live, that’s fine … you’ve got your mobile phone for that. Be sure to check out Andy Inkahto’s “iPod Fully Loaded” which will help you get even more out of your iPod. [...]

I fear my dock will end up looking like my desk with piles of stuff everywhere. They should offer a Desktop/Dock Makeover option where some good-looking person visits you onscreen every once in a while and tidies things up. It would be a nice break and fun to watch. What is next after stacks? Drawers?

Hey Dave, interesting read! One questions though, when you say "Finder on the PC" do you mean the "FInder" as a shell over Windows or selling OSX to PC manufacturers? Either way I enjoyed it. :)

The power button can be made accessible with a quick drill of a hole. It's on the bottom of the MacBook so even a slight misalignment when you drill would not be a big deal.

Dave, what an awesome job you did covering MacWorld! I felt like I was there. Although I haven't been to MacWorld since the late 90's (Boston and New York) not much has changed in that each year there's a theme, it's HUGE and exhausting, and a heck of a lot of fun! Although I haven’t been to MacWorld since the late 90′s (Boston and New York) not much has changed in that each year there’s a theme, it’s HUGE and exhausting, and a heck of a lot of fun! The photos were great, very well laid out and appropriately captioned. Thanks for your efforts.

Great feedback. Do us a favor before the next generation of Mac OS X comes out and we rev the book for that OS: go through your copy, mark up areas where you think our explanation is weak or exercises would be quite helpful, and mail it to me. I'll send you back a clean, unmarked, signed copy of the book and take all your comments into account when we revise it!

Then maybe we can have a GOOD date together! :-)

Upon further investigation, in an FAQ hidden on a page within a page, etc, in rogueameoba's website, they do specifiy that the number of listeners is determined by just how much upstream your internet service provides. That does not explain how one of my sets skipped heavily at 96kbs when I have about four times as much upstream on one of my trial runs.

Alas, Cricket Graph didn't qualify for your review of survivors. Perhaps you'ld like to shed a tear or two for the dinosaurs that's didn't make it past their time. You couldn't stir up the owners to revive it, could you? I can't go to an Intel Mac because I can't do without Cricket Graph!

Mike! I've been getting this error on my own webserver. I thought it was something wrong with my server's config or my Mac. Thanks for confirming I'm not crazy...and great post by the way!

Hey Mike! Thanks for the update and I hope some of that secret stuff that can't be talked about just yet is amazing because it was kind of a slow keynote. Oh well, considering the engineering team got the Intel transistion to happen so fast I can't really complain. Have a good week out there.

A couple of things I would like to point out:

1. There is a PDF version of the book available from Amazon. In fact, the PDF version came out before the print version, and has always been available for purchase for a cheaper price.

2. You should mention the book's supporting web site (osxbook.com), which has a ton of extra bonus material that's not in the book.

3. Relating to your point about the EFI coverage not being as much as you would want, osxbook.com makes up for that in the bonus material section.
