Hey Michelle,

I found a couple of shops on Amazon that are selling them for as low as 5 bucks!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002PIYA6U/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new

Hope this helps, you might double check that it is the right part number.

I wanted to purchase an extra charging cable for my Macbook, so I purchased a refurb 60W charging cable/brick through OWC. I guess I expected it to also include the thicker extension portion of the cable (with the 3-prong outlet plug than then connects into the power brick for the extra length), but unfortunately it arrived as the brick portion only.

Since I purchased this to be able to keep the extra in my travel bag and still keep my original at home, I really do need the capability of having the extra length. I can purchase the entire package through the Apple Store that includes both portions, but that's at twice the price of my OWC refurb.

So, to make a long story just a bit longer, I thought that I'd see if anyone out there had an extra extender cable that they'd be willing to sell at a reasonable price. Hopefully, low enough so that I'm still getting the savings that I thought I'd get through buying refurb.

Hey Sally!

Thanks so much for posting in the forums. Your G5 is capable of upgrading to both Tiger and Leopard, all the way up to 10.5.8. I would recommend going up to Leopard (10.5) at this point. You'll also need to upgrade the ram in this machine to do so properly. I would recommend going up to at least 2 gigs. Check out macsales.com to find the right ram for your machine.

The quicktime problems are probably related to the being on 10.3.9 as well.

However, the forums are for a perk for paid LAUG members, so I'll have to block your account from posting going forward. If you'd like to become a paid member contact Dave Greenbaum at dsg@mac.com , or talk to one of the board members at our next meeting. It is a 10 dollar fee and grants you paid member access for life. Thanks!

I have OS 10.3.9 (Panther), on a 7-yr old G5. It only has 512 MB DDR SDRAM (and processor is 1.6 Ghz PowerPC G5).

Starting to run into sites & programs that require 10.4, but I can't find any way to upgrade to 10.4. Can't even get some QuickTime videos to run, but I don't know if that's the same problem or something else?

Can I even put Tiger or Leopard on this machine, or is it too slow/old? I know I can't go to Snow Leopard, because it's Intel and this machine isn't.

I'd like to keep using this computer for awhile -- but have it run everything. Is there a solution?

Kathleen,

I tested out your calendar in Windows and works just fine. Attached is a picture of the screen.

A couple things you might suggest to your PC friends:

1. Update their browsers to the latest version (whether Mac or PC)
2. Make sure to copy the entire URL Address to the calendar.

If you look above the link doesn't work if you just click the link. However, if you copy and paste the entire link into your browser bar it should work just fine.

Hope that helps clarify the situation.

Matt - I published a Kathleen'sTest calendar just now. (I took my Gallery one down). These are the Apple instructions for sending an email to people to tell them how to access the calendar.

You can view my calendar at:
http://ical.mac.com/artistkate/Kathleen's%20Test

You can subscribe to my calendar at:
webcal://ical.mac.com/artistkate/Kathleen's%20Test.ics

To learn more about iCal or to download a copy, go to http://www.apple.com/ical

Thanks for helping with this.

Hey Kathleen,

If you could send a link to the calendar we might be able to diagnose things a little better.

My guess is that your PC friends might need to upgrade their web browser to either the latest version of Internet Explorer or the latest copy of Firefox for the PC.

Hope that helps :)

I'm not aware of a program with that will directly track the bandwidth in and out. However i did the math, on a silver account you'd have to do an outrageous amount of downloads in one day to achieve 10 gig. I suspect their system is recording an error. As my twitter/facebook accounts, have shown, Sunflower is having serious problems.. . bordering on fraud. *We* had to pay for Geeks On Wheels to come to our home for cable modem problems. Sunflower SWORE it was our network and REQUIRED us to PAY Geeks to come to our home...only for geeks to say it was sunflower. Then they first believed us there was a problem in our node.

Change the password on your airport and set Mac filtering just to play it safe.

None of the activities you mention come anywhere close to maybe more than a gig. With 4 computers in the house we haven't had 10 gig in one day...worse was 6 when the Tivo kept downloading a show over and over

Does anyone know of any software that will track my download (received) bandwidth and the programs that are using it?

This past month something has been zapping bandwidth like crazy. Most months I use less than 10 Gig of my 15 available through Sunflower. In March I actually came close to my limit with 14.5 GB.

However, in April I’m already up to 23.25 with 10-11 GB on April 4th alone. I called Sunflower right after that 10 Gig day and said that I wasn’t sure where that could have come from. I hadn’t had any large iTunes downloads, I hadn’t watched any streaming TV shows or movie videos, I hadn’t download any major software, etc. The only thing that I did that day that I could think of was that I had installed Foxmarks/Xmarks to synchronize bookmarks between Safari & Firefox. It’s possible that the syncing stalled out at some point and continued to zap the bandwidth, but I’m not completely convinced

They agreed to credit my account for that 10 GB, but even subtracting that I’m using more than I can mentally account for. I’m to the point that I’ve turned Airport off unless I need to turn it on temporarily to check mail or update my RSS feeds. Someone suggested that I turn off the Genius feature in iTunes because it sometimes eats up bandwidth.

So I began to search for software that might help me track down the culprit application. I thought that maybe “Little Snitch” would help, but it only seems to document outgoing information.

Istat Menus help a little. The Network Menu at least tracks and shows current bandwidth activity, but what I’d really like is something that tracks the sent/received bandwidth for different programs. For example, bandwidth associated with NetNewsWire, iTunes, Entourage, Safari, Firefox, etc.

Does anyone know if such a software exists?

-- Michelle

I'm back again - now trying to Publish a calendar on-line (on .Mac) for the Art Guild. The Help manual said anyone could view it using a standard web browser. Most of the potential users are PC users. They can't access it using the "view". But several have been able to access it using the "subscribe" URL. People with Microsoft Explorer can't access either one. I thought Apple was trying to become PC compatible!!! Help......anyone?

Matt,
Thanks for reply. I have OSX 10.4.11 but think it should be OK. I realize what I did wrong - had 3 calendars checked (home, work, garden) and have been adding events that are now all over the place. I meant to have all the current events be in the home calendar. Is there a way to combine all these into the home calendar? I don't need a work calendar.

Hey Kathleen,

Events are added to whatever calendar you have selected on the left hand side of the screen (I'm assuming you have leopard 10.5). The current calendar I have selected is the Test Calendar, so whatever events I add to iCal will be added to that calendar.

However, all of the Calendar will show up in iCal unless you check or uncheck their visibility. In the pic above 'Matt IT' and 'Service Calls' are both calendars I have, but they aren't currently visible because they are unchecked.

Hope that helps, and be sure to post back any questions you may have.

I’ve been having some issues with exporting a lengthy iMovie ‘09 project to a QT movie for later use in iDVD. The majority of the details of the problem are in the following Apple Discussion forum thread. If anyone has any other ideas besides those mentioned in the thread, that would be terrific.

Hey Bill!

Unfortunately you'll have to track down a retail copy of OS 10.4 Tiger. The version of Mac OS 10.4 that is currently installed on your G5 is specific to your G5 hardware and will not work on your G4 Powerbook.

I did a quick amazon and ebay search for a copy and didn't come up with much, but maybe some other members have some ideas.

Hope that helps!

I have a G4 power book and a G5 desktop that came with mac OS 10.3 and OS 10.4 respectively. I want them to have the same OS. Two questions-- 1. what is the best way to upgrade the laptop to the desktop OS? 2. What is legal (or not) or ethical. Can I just use a copy of the desktop and load it onto the laptop ( the desktop has been updated several times- which is very painful on a dialup conn- so I would like to copy the current OS to the laptop.

Thanks so much for any help!

Bill

I've got teaser for you guys to see if there is anything I'm missing.

We recently came back into the ownership of a G3 900mhz iBook and I'm trying to get it on the network.

I've tried two different airport cards (one is known to be good) and I've toggled the home network from WPA, WPA2 and WEP to see if that makes a different.

I've also wiped and reinstalled the OS from a Tiger install disk. However, every time I go to connect to a network (also locked or unlocked) I get the "there was an error connecting to this network" dialog.

Any ideas, cause I'm fresh out?

Thanks. I'm glad that we're capable of adding images--that's often very helpful troubleshooting and explaining issues.

Thanks for all you're doing to get the forums off on the right foot.

Does this forum allow the posting of images? I sometimes take a screenshot of something with Skitch. Skitch then allows you to copy/paste a URL for web-based forums.

I tried doing this in another forum question, but whenever I clicked on "Send Post", it returned with a screen that said "Topic Not Found".

Here's another's reply to my question.

"What I recommend is creating a new virtual machine with XP SP 2 and try that without SP#. Install the drivers and go from there."

Am I allowed to have two VM's using the same install disk of XP? Will it even know that it's been used twice unless I have both open at the same time?

I’ve been trying to get a specific hardware device to work on my Parallels installation—it’s a film and slide digital converter. It works fine on my XP machine at school, but I couldn’t get it to work in Parallels. It does rely on DirectX 9 which the Parallels 4.0 update was advertised as having adding improved support for. So I updated thinking that maybe the problem was that Parallels wasn’t supporting DirectX 9 well enough to run the program.

I once again tried using the converter in Parallels with no success. I looked a little further into the requirements and it says that it required XP-SP2 or Vista. Our school computers are still on SP2, but I had updated my Macs virtual machine to SP3 after installing XP onto my computer. I just assumed that it was a good choice.

I came to the conclusion that the “minor” difference may explain why I could get it to work on my school computer, but not on my Mac in Parallels.

So, last night I decided to uninstall the SP3 from my Windows virtual machine. It appeared to work fine, although it took quite a long time.

However, when it finished and I initiated the required restart, the problems began. It began a vicious repeating cycle of errors screens. The next two screenshots are as close as I could get to capturing the dialogue. The image disappeared from the screen so quickly, that I can’t guarantee that I captured at the exact moment in order to catch all of the text. The two screens kept reappearing as it automatically continued trying to successfully reboot. My only way out was to quit out of Parallels.

I was able to restore based on an older snapshot that I had. However, I’d still like to try uninstalling SP3 so that I can try my hardware once again.

I was hoping that some of you have worked on Windows machines (and in Parallels) enough to know from the error dialogue what might have caused this issue. I don’t want to have the entire problem recreated when I try the uninstall again.

Any ideas or advice?

Has anyone ever uninstalled the SP3 update?

I’m assuming that if I run into issues again, the Parallels “Snapshot” feature reinstalls/reverts XP back to the exact state it was in prior to the failed attempt.
