Hey Kathleen,
Events are added to whatever calendar you have selected on the left hand side of the screen (I'm assuming you have leopard 10.5). The current calendar I have selected is the Test Calendar, so whatever events I add to iCal will be added to that calendar.
However, all of the Calendar will show up in iCal unless you check or uncheck their visibility. In the pic above 'Matt IT' and 'Service Calls' are both calendars I have, but they aren't currently visible because they are unchecked.
