LAUG Podcast 01.07: Question and Answers

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

A podcast from the January meeting of the Lawrence Apple Users Group. This month’s topic included our annual question and answer meeting hosted by LAUG’s own Dave Greenbaum.

The meeting opened up with introductions, the recent Apple news and then jumped into questions from those in attendance as well as emailed ones. The questions ranged from how to switch from Dial-up to a cable model to how to connect a bluetooth enabled cell phone to the Mac.

The door prizes for this month’s meeting included Real World Mac Maintenance from Peachpit and iPod and iTunes: 4th Edition courtesy of O’Reilly.

MacWorld: 4.3 Wrapup

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

Thanks Brian for giving us your review of the show and items. Here is mine.

Best Apple Hardware.

Not the iPhone. Here’s my rant about the iPhone. It’s Apple’s next Newton. What was the Newton. It was Apple’s Palm Pilot…before Palm Pilots were cool. It was way ahead of it’s time. The concept was great…the implementation was lousy. My first concern with the iPhone is price. $499 AND a two year contract. That’s outrageous price. For that price…I’ll carry around a cell phone AND iPod. Really, how hard is it to carry both around? Ok, there are times it’s nice to have both..but in those situations how practical is this.

Review: Radiolover

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

Dave’s current spurt of posting from Macworld has inspired me to post a couple of reviews that have been on the back burner for a while. First up is a great app from Bitcartel Software, entitled Radiolover. Basically you can think of it as a Tivo or DVR for streaming audio content.

While I subscribe to tons of podcasts there are still a few radio programs that I’d love to have on my iPod that haven’t gotten hip to podcasting. Radiolover fills that gap nicely. To start recording go to your favorite radio station’s website, copy the address of their streaming audio URL and enter that into Radiolover. Once you’ve entered the URL you are free to setup up a schedule of when you want to record that station and how it integrates with iTunes. The best part of the app is that once the recording is complete Radiolover automatically moves the file(s) over to iTunes and will set their name, genre and add them to a playlist of your choosing.

Personally I’ve been using the app for a few months now to record NPR shows that are not offered as podcasts yet. To do so I utilize the WBEZ Chicago’s streaming radio station as my local NPR station does not offer MP3 streaming. If you do run into a radio station that streams their content via Windows Media or Real Player instead of MP3, BitCartel makes another app, iRecordMusic for just that purpose. While iRecordMusic has many of the same features, in fact more features then Radiolover, I enjoy Radiolover’s simple clean interface for scheduling recordings.

Overall I give this app 4 out of 5 dog cows. My only complaint is that the program does not auto-launch when it needs to record. However, using iCal to schedule the recordings as well as Radiolover allows for seemless-timeshifting-audio-joy.

MacWorld: Version 4.2

Monday, January 15th, 2007

Like most software programs, I missed the ship date of version 4.2 You were expecting it on Saturday…not Sunday. Also, since I have so many pictures from the show, I’m creating a MacWorld: Version 4.1a which will include the pictures can be found here.

However, you were probably also expecting iLife and iWork ‘07 at Macworld, and Apple obviously missed the ship date on that. Rumor was iWork ‘07 would have a spreadsheet component. Again, my analysis is that Steve Jobs pulled everyone off of their projects in order to have the iPhone done in time for the show.

MacWorld: Version 4.1

Friday, January 12th, 2007

Why 4.1? This is the first day of my fourth visit to Macworld Expo. Thus Version 4.0., release 1.

Interesting day for sure. It started out with a L O N G line at the Midwest desk to check in. I thought that was strange. Then I noticed they all seemed to be wearing KU stuff. Ok, granted they won last night and there are lots of fans. But so many…all at once. Well, it was all the KU Basketball people. If I were a fan, I would have not only recognized that fact, but they were going to Orlando.

MacWorld: Pre-Release Beta: Getting Ready to Go

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

Last year I got great feedback on my postings about MacWorld, but people wanted more details. As you know, Brian Best has been posting his experiences so I’m going to mirror his style a bit. So you might ask? How do you get ready for Macworld. Well, I’m a bit of a worry wort for those that don’t know. Always get anxious before a trip. Afraid the house will burn down while I’m gone. etc. So how does one prep for MacWorld? Glad you asked. As you can tell this isn’t a vacation. That happens after the show!
