I like that you can print stealth labels for both domestic and international shipments through Endicia. Plus you can brand your company by customizing your labels. I picked up a label printer at http://www.discountlabelprinters.com and love it!

Incase it is of any interest to you, a while back I had a great deal from a British labels company who were selling off all their <a href="http://www.selfadhesivelabels.com/stickers.html" rel="nofollow">plain labels</a> at really low costs. I don't know what their prices are like now but could be worth taking a look.

Steven,

You might want to check with Comcast, because they may be taking you for a ride. The only type of cable you need a box to receive is digital cable. If you just want to watch regular analog standard definition cable, you do not need a cable box. Eventually all cable will go digital, but that won't happen for a few years. In the meantime, the EyeTV works just like the "cable ready" TVs that have been sold for the past 25 years -- in other words, no box needed (unless you want high definition of HBO, Showtime, etc).

Hope this helps. Good luck.

I recently returned this device to amazon. Fortunately I bought it at amazon, as I am still waiting for a reply from the email I received three weeks ago from Elgato. The technical support, while polite, either doesn't really read your email or doesn't respond for weeks, as noted above.

I am quite familiar with computers, but not with TV interfaces. I was under the impression that I could plug my cable (from the wall) into this device, which did not work. For it to work via cable (instead of catching OTA signals via a antenna and booster) one must use a cable box. Apparently Comcast doesn't allow boxes they don't charge you for, so I can't use a box without giving Comcast more of my money. The antenna and the booster add a hundred bucks (to do it right) to the cost of setting this up. I know I lack the technical knowledge to fully understand how to get the most out of this product, but Elgato needs to explain more fully just how to use it. However, they don't even respond to emails . . .

Thanks for listening.

The EyeTV 250 does support using the IRTrans with iRed software to control a cable box the same way the TiVo Series 2 does. Not as convenient as using a CableCard - CableLabs is being obstructionist about whose hardware gets the OK for that; so far only TiVo and ATI have consumer cableCard products on the market. But the iRed software's integration with EyeTV is basically seamless, it really works great with my encrypted digital cable account.

[...] Though their Targus bag had nice storage room and met the protection criteria, it wasn’t stylish. Even without my nerd day hangups, the backpack wasn’t very good looking. It reminded me of one of those square Pan-Am travel bags grandma used to have. I had this sudden urge to offer people breath mints while using it…or at least save teabags for future dunks (Grandma: “You can reuse a teabag at least 3 times, stop wasting money young man”). However, I’ve seen those type of bags at Urban Outfitters, so maybe it actually attempted to be retro. Nonetheless, the shoulder strap didn’t adequately distribute the weight and I felt very uncomfortable walking with it. It was great on the bike though. After forcing myself to use it for the review, I quickly put it on the shelf and abandoned it. It’s a backpack with a messenger bag strap, nothing more. Sorry Targus, no offense, but I don’t think you’ll be seeing too many marketing or fashion majors using your bag. Maybe you can do some cross-promotion on Warcraft, or hit the other end with http://www.aarp.org/. It was an upgrade, but not by much. The only reason I’d upgrade from my black bag to this is because my Macbook fits perfect. However, I had to remove my Neocase sleeve to use it. [...]

Hello, iMac 24 inch friend,

thank you for your excellant review for the iMac 24-inch model. I am in the market for this one and have been to the Apple Store several times. I am presently a Windows 98 user.
Concerning playing the DVD , they gave me an earful , which I really don’t understand. It goes like this.
I have a couple of European DVD”s and I am being told I can only play them 5 x on this system and than the system will set the final setting and I will be unable to play American DVD’s. I just don’t get it. When I paid for DVD’s either in Europe or the USA , I should be able to play them at all times.

Since I am a layman here, can you please put some light on this in plain English. I would very much appreciate hearing from you, thank you for your time. with kind regards, Manfred H. Braig

Hi,

i live in Fiji on a remote island. Trojans and viruses killed my last pc, i needed to buy a new laptop from USA so i asked a friend to bring me one when she visited four months ago. She brought a MacBook with OS X 10.4.9 because she owns a Mac. She is a teacher and she was tired of viruses killing her pcs. Both of my sons and my ex own Macs.

i found this site through Google, searching "Safari cant open, lost network connection, report bug to Apple. After reporting this bug to Apple like, 20 times, i figured they weren't actually going to help me and i had better try to get help from someplace else. i like the clean, crisp layout of this site and the article "Worst Mac error message ever" was helpful. i stopped reporting this 'bug' too.

Anyway, being a new Mac user, having NO local support, no other Mac users on the island, and not beiing educated or particularly smart about computers, i find myself comparing pc to Mac rather unfavorably and hope someone/s out there can help me come to terms with my new laptop.

For instance, my pc came with a xp recovery disk. My Mac did not. i tried to make a spread sheet but it seems there is not a spreadsheet program included. its comes with all these gaget-like things but nothing for writing real documents. i download things but find i can't read them. Everything ends up on the desktop, yahoo messenger and some others dont really open with an icon, i have to check 'agree' everytime, then they give me an icon to open. Because i am on dial up and it's rather slow, i need to have at least 4 to 5 windows open at one time, one on top of the other. i have a devil of a time getting from one to the other, and if i am also using iMail, finding something under five safari windows is time consuming and frustrating. i dont like the online help much. i find the spotlight feature to be pretty ineffective. i have one program i want to install called VedaBase which is only made for pc. i heard about virtual pc but some say it opens the Mac to viruses again, defeating the purpose. i heard the Mac was easier to use but i think people must think icons are simpler than words. i got it to speak to me but not to listen to me. No delete forward button on the keyboard. I hope most of my problems are just ignorance on my part.

On the positive side, it's quiet. Looks nice. works with iPod. Affordable.

Please forgive me if my complaints have hurt the feelings of any of you Mac fans and experts. If any of you know how i could improve my Mac experience, i would be sincerely grateful.

[...] With all that extra space on your full iPod what can you put on it? Want to watch YouTube videos on your iPod? No problem, Jax by Joesoft (a division of Prosoft Engineering) does that! It installs into iTunes and allows you to easily transfer videos to your iPod. Not only will it do that, but it will synchronize your Apple Mail, Word Documents, and PDFs. Heck, it will even download weather forecasts, driving directions, gas prices, movie showtimes, and stock quotes. Apparently the 3.0 version will tell you the next president, but Joesoft is working out the bugs on that (just kidding … maybe). Oh, and Jax works with an iPhone too, but that’s kind of redundant. While Jax’s content can’t be updated live, that’s fine … you’ve got your mobile phone for that. Be sure to check out Andy Inkahto’s “iPod Fully Loaded” which will help you get even more out of your iPod. [...]

I fear my dock will end up looking like my desk with piles of stuff everywhere. They should offer a Desktop/Dock Makeover option where some good-looking person visits you onscreen every once in a while and tidies things up. It would be a nice break and fun to watch. What is next after stacks? Drawers?

Hey Dave, interesting read! One questions though, when you say "Finder on the PC" do you mean the "FInder" as a shell over Windows or selling OSX to PC manufacturers? Either way I enjoyed it. :)

The power button can be made accessible with a quick drill of a hole. It's on the bottom of the MacBook so even a slight misalignment when you drill would not be a big deal.

I’ve just installed Powerslides on my iBook G4 and I run OSX 10.3.9 software. The program says it successfully installed but I have access only to the normal set one and normal set two folders. None of the backgrounds folder and Powerslides font are active files and I cannot access them. I can’t tell if I’m doing something wrong or if there is a problem with the software. Can anyone help me out there?

Dave, what an awesome job you did covering MacWorld! I felt like I was there. Although I haven't been to MacWorld since the late 90's (Boston and New York) not much has changed in that each year there's a theme, it's HUGE and exhausting, and a heck of a lot of fun! The photos were great, very well laid out and appropriately captioned. Thanks for your efforts.

Great feedback. Do us a favor before the next generation of Mac OS X comes out and we rev the book for that OS: go through your copy, mark up areas where you think our explanation is weak or exercises would be quite helpful, and mail it to me. I'll send you back a clean, unmarked, signed copy of the book and take all your comments into account when we revise it!

Then maybe we can have a GOOD date together! :-)

Upon further investigation, in an FAQ hidden on a page within a page, etc, in rogueameoba's website, they do specifiy that the number of listeners is determined by just how much upstream your internet service provides. That does not explain how one of my sets skipped heavily at 96kbs when I have about four times as much upstream on one of my trial runs.

Alas, Cricket Graph didn't qualify for your review of survivors. Perhaps you'ld like to shed a tear or two for the dinosaurs that's didn't make it past their time. You couldn't stir up the owners to revive it, could you? I can't go to an Intel Mac because I can't do without Cricket Graph!

Hey Mike! Thanks for the update and I hope some of that secret stuff that can't be talked about just yet is amazing because it was kind of a slow keynote. Oh well, considering the engineering team got the Intel transistion to happen so fast I can't really complain. Have a good week out there.

A couple of things I would like to point out:

1. There is a PDF version of the book available from Amazon. In fact, the PDF version came out before the print version, and has always been available for purchase for a cheaper price.

2. You should mention the book's supporting web site (osxbook.com), which has a ton of extra bonus material that's not in the book.

3. Relating to your point about the EFI coverage not being as much as you would want, osxbook.com makes up for that in the bonus material section.
